The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 1:07 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Tyrone Benskin, Nina Grewal, Scott Reid, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Hsu for Hon. Irwin Cotler and Rathika Sitsabaiesan for Wayne Marston.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Miguel Bernal-Castillero, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: International Crisis Group: Alan Keenan, Senior Analyst, Sri Lanka Project Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Subcommittee resumed its study of the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.
 

Alan Keenan made a statement and answered questions.

 

Ted Hsu moved, — That, the Subcommittee invite the United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Mr. Adama Dieng, to testify on February 25, 2014, about the United Nations’ and the international community’s responsibility to raise awareness of and mobilize appropriate action to combat mass atrocity crimes.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The Subcommittee resumed consideration of the human rights situation in Sri Lanka. Questioning of the witness resumed.

 

On motion of David Sweet, it was agreed, — That the Subcommittee proceed to sit in camera.

 

At 2:09 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 2:09 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That, the Subcommittee invite the United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Mr. Adama Dieng, to testify on February 25, 2014, at a time to be determined, about the United Nations’ and the international community’s responsibility to raise awareness of and mobilize appropriate action to combat mass atrocity crimes.

 

At 2:14 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
