The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Eve Adams, Libby Davies, Earl Dreeshen, Hon. Hedy Fry, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Isabelle Morin, Joy Smith and David Wilks.

 

Acting Members present: Robert Chisholm for Wayne Marston and Rob Clarke for Earl Dreeshen.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Pang, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Health: Sandra Bruce, Director General, Non-Insured Health Benefits Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch; Debra Gillis, Acting Director General, Interprofessional Advisory and Program Support, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, Health Canada; Robert Ianiro, Director General, Controlled Substances and Tobacco Directorate, Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch; John Patrick Stewart, Senior Executive Director, Therapeutic Products Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of the Government's role in addressing prescription drug abuse.
 

Robert Ianiro made a statement and, with other witnesses answered questions.

 

Libby Davies gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee may meet in camera only for the purpose of discussing: (a) wages, salaries and other employee benefits, (b) contracts and contract negotiations, (c) labour relations and personnel matters, (d) a draft report, (e) briefings concerning national security; and that all votes taken in camera be recorded in the Minutes of Proceedings, including how each member voted when recorded votes are requested.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the Government's role in addressing prescription drug abuse. Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 

At 4:21 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
