The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 306, The Valour Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Romeo Saganash, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Bernard Trottier.

 

Acting Members present: Jean Rousseau for Hélène Laverdière and David Wilks for Hon. Laurie Hawn.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; Brian Hermon, Analyst. House of Commons: Joann Garbig, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Hong Kong Democratic Foundation: Alan Ka-lun Lung, Chairman. As individuals: Yves Tiberghien, Director, Institute of Asian Research and Associate Professor of Political Science, University of British Columbia; Dalena Wright, Senior Fellow, Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Harvard Kennedy School; Simon Young, Professor and Associate Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, the Committee resumed its study of the situation in Hong Kong.
 

Yves Tiberghien, Dalena Wright, by videoconference from Cambridge, Massachusetts, Alan Ka-lun Lung, by videoconference from Hong Kong, China, and Simon Young, also by videoconference from Hong Kong, China, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:56 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:57 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee examine the issue of North American integration and competitiveness in preparation for the next North American Leaders’ Summit in Canada in 2015.

 

At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
