The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 306, The Valour Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, David Anderson, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Hélène Laverdière and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

Acting Members present: Hoang Mai for Romeo Saganash and Dave Van Kesteren for Lois Brown.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; Brian Hermon, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Bessma Momani, Associate Professor, Balsillie School of International Affairs, University of Waterloo. Iran Human Rights Documentation Center: Rod Sanjabi, Executive Director. Catholic Near East Welfare Association: Carl Hétu, National Director, Canada; Elias Mallon, External Affairs Officer, United States.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's Response to the Violence, Religious Persecution and Dislocation Caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
 

Bessma Momani, by videoconference from Waterloo, Ontario, and Rod Sanjabi, by videoconference from Shelton, Connecticut, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 9:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:50 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Elias Mallon, by videoconference from New York, New York, and Carl Hétu made statements and answered questions.

 
By unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Paul Dewar moved, — That the Committee invite the Honourable John Baird, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development, to appear before the Committee regarding the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2014-2015 before December 5, 2014 and that this meeting be televised.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 10:47 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
