The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met in a televised session at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Vice-Chair, Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe, Joe Daniel, Chungsen Leung, Hon. John McCallum, Costas Menegakis, Ted Opitz, Jasbir Sandhu and Devinder Shory.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. John McKay for Hon. John McCallum and Philip Toone for Rathika Sitsabaiesan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Béchard, Analyst; Sandra Elgersma, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Inter-Clinic Immigration Working Group: Geraldine Sadoway, Staff Lawyer, Parkdale Community Legal Services; Nicole Veitch, Law Student Caseworker. Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs: Shimon Fogel, Chief Executive Officer. Alliance of Canadian Terror Victims Foundation: Maureen Basnicki, Founder and Executive Director, Co-Founder of the Canadian Coalition Against Terror. Foundation for Defense of Democracies: Sheryl Saperia, Director of Policy for Canada. Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers: Audrey Macklin, Executive Member, Professor and Chair in Human Rights Law, Faculty of Law, University of Toronto.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of the subject matter of Bill C-24, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
 

Geraldine Sadoway, Nicole Veitch and Shimon Fogel made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Audrey Macklin, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, Maureen Basnicki and Sheryl Saperia made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
