The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met in a televised session at 3:26 p.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe, Joe Daniel, Chungsen Leung, Hon. John McCallum, Costas Menegakis, Ted Opitz, Jasbir Sandhu, Devinder Shory, Rathika Sitsabaiesan and David Tilson.

 

Acting Members present: Bev Shipley for Costas Menegakis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Béchard, Analyst; Sandra Elgersma, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canada Border Services Agency: Lesley Soper, Acting Director General, Enforcement and Intelligence Programs; Geoffrey Leckey, Director General, Enforcement and Intelligence Operations Division. Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Supt Jean Cormier, Director, Federal Coordination Centres. South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO): Deepa Mattoo, Staff Lawyer and Acting Executive Director. As an individual: Richard Kurland, Policy Analyst and Lawyer. Shield of Athena Family Services: Melpa Kamateros, Executive Director; Siran Nahabedian, Social Worker for Female Victims of Conjugal Violence and of Domestic Violence, Athena's House.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 3:27 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:28 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 36,600.00, for the study entitled “Strengthening the Protection of Women in our Immigration System”, be adopted.

 

At 3:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:30 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 6, 2014, the Committee resumed its study on strengthening the protection of women in our immigration system.
 

Lesley Soper made a statement and, with Geoffrey Leckey and Supt Jean Cormier, answered questions.

 

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Deepa Mattoo, Richard Kurland and Melpa Kamateros each made a statement and, with Siran Nahabedian, answered questions.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
