The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 228, The Valour Building, the Chair, Gordon Brown, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gordon Brown, Rick Dykstra, Jim Hillyer, Pierre Nantel, Kennedy Stewart, John Weston, Terence Young and David Yurdiga.

 

Acting Members present: Dan Harris for Rathika Sitsabaiesan and Frank Valeriote for Hon. Stéphane Dion.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Philippe Méla, Legislative Clerk; Michelle Legault, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Wilma McNeill; Brian Ray, President of Branch 114 of the Royal Canadian Legion; LCol Michael Stevenson, Retired; Donald Stewart, President of Veterans' Council, Sunnybrook Veterans Centre ; Harry Watts.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, November 5, 2014, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-597, An Act to amend the Holidays Act (Remembrance Day).
 

Wilma McNeill, Donald Stewart and LCol Michael Stevenson, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, made statements and answered questions.

 

A point of order was raised regarding misleading statements during the questioning of the witnesses.

 

RULING BY THE CHAIR

The Chair ruled that the nature of the Member’s questions was acceptable.

 

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Brian Ray and Harry Watts, by videoconference from Kitchener, Ontario made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:15 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 5,100, for the study of Bill S-219, An Act respecting a national day of commemoration of the exodus of Vietnamese refugees and their acceptance in Canada after the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 5,300, for the study of Bill C-597, An Act to amend the Holidays Act (Remembrance Day), be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee extend the meeting scheduled for Monday, April 27, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m, for Committee Business.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
