The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, David Anderson, Leon Benoit, Blaine Calkins, Joan Crockatt, Claude Gravelle, Ted Hsu, Peter Julian, Ryan Leef, Laurin Liu, Jamie Nicholls and Brad Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Hoang Mai for Peter Julian.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst; Milana Simikian, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Bombardier Inc.: Pierre Seïn Pyun, Vice-President, Government Affairs; Marc Laforge, Director , Communications, Bombardier Transportation and Public Affairs. General Motors of Canada Limited: Philip Petsinis, Manager, Government Relations. Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO: Christopher Smillie, Senior Advisor, Government Relations and Public Affairs. Atlantic Hydrogen Inc.: David Wagner, President and Chief Executive Officer. Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation: Andreas Truckenbrodt, Chief Executive Officer.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Laurin Liu moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee hear officials from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, no later than on Thursday, March 28, 2013, in relation to the shipment of highly-enriched uranium from Chalk River to South Carolina.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 6.

 

Ted Hsu moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), given the concerns raised in the 2012 Fall Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, the Committee further study the issues raised in Chapter 1; that the respective Chairs and officials of the two Atlantic offshore petroleum boards (Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board and Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board) be invited to appear before the Committee; and that the Committee report its findings to the House by June 2013.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 6.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 4, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of innovation in the energy sector.
 

Pierre Seïn Pyun, Philip Petsinis, Christopher Smillie, David Wagner, by videoconference from Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Andreas Truckenbrodt, by videoconference from Burnaby, British Columbia, made statements and, with Marc Laforge, answered questions.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
