The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, David Anderson, Leon Benoit, Blaine Calkins, Anne-Marie Day, Claude Gravelle, Richard M. Harris, François Lapointe, Wladyslaw Lizon, Kennedy Stewart and Brad Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Hsu for David J. McGuinty.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst; Mohamed Zakzouk, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited: Eberhard Scherkus, President and Chief Operating Officer. Newmont Mining Corporation: Chris Hanks, Vice-President, Environmental Affairs, Hope Bay Mining Ltd.; Tara Christie, Senior Advisor, External and Government Affairs, Hope Bay Mining Ltd. NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines: Tom Hoefer, Executive Director; Larry Connell, Vice-President; Brent Murphy, Director. Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami: John Cheechoo, Director; John Merritt, Senior Policy Advisor.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on September 26, 2011, the Committee resumed its study on resource development in Northern Canada.
 

Eberhard Scherkus, Chris Hanks, Tara Christie, Tom Hoefer and John Cheechoo made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:12 p.m., by unanimous consent and pursuant to Standing Order 115(5), it was agreed that the Committee continue to sit.

 

At 4:18, pursuant to Standing Order 115(5), the sitting was suspended.

At 5:05, the sitting resumed.

 

The witnesses answered questions.

 

At 6:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
