The Special Committee on Violence Against Indigenous Women met in cameraat 6:00 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Stella Ambler, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Kelly Block, Jean Crowder, Libby Davies, Robert Goguen, Cathy McLeod, Michelle Rempel, Greg Rickford, Romeo Saganash and Susan Truppe.

 

Acting Members present: Linda Duncan for Niki Ashton and Alexandrine Latendresse for Libby Davies.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Julie Cool, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Native Women's Association of Canada: Michèle Audette, President; Claudette Dumont-Smith, Executive Director; Irene Goodwin, Director, Violence Prevention and Safety.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure wich read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Thursday, May 23, 2013 to consider to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1.That the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) be invited to testify before the Committee on Thursday May 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm;

2. That NWAC be designated as an expert witness and that it be invited to speak at the beginning of each of the 3 themes (Violence and its Causes, Front Line Assistance, Preventing Violence Against Aboriginal Women) and that it be welcome to attend all public meetings;

3.That on June 6 the Committee hear from two panels of three (3) witnesses for an hour each, with the understanding that half the witnesses will be selected by the government party while the other half will be selected by the opposition parties;

4.That on June 13 the Committee hear from two panels of three (3) witnesses for an hour each, with the understanding that half the witnesses will be selected by the government party while the other half will be selected by the opposition parties.

 

It was agreed, — That the first report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

At 6:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:12 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 26, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of violence against indigenous women.
 

Michèle Audette, Irene Goodwin and Claudette Dumont-Smith made statements and answered questions.

 

At 8:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
