The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 8:48 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Komarnicki, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, Brad Butt, Ryan Cleary, Rodger Cuzner, Joe Daniel, Ed Komarnicki, François Lapointe, Kellie Leitch, Colin Mayes, Phil McColeman and Devinder Shory.

 

Acting Members present: Alexandre Boulerice for Ryan Cleary and Mike Sullivan for Chris Charlton.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst; André Léonard, Analyst. House of Commons: Isabelle Dumas, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Labour Congress: Kenneth V. Georgetti, President. International Union of Operating Engineers: Harold McBride, Executive Director, Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario. Petroleum Services Association of Canada: Mark Salkeld, President and Chief Executive Officer. International Union of Operating Engineers: Steven Schumann, Canadian Government Affairs Director. All Weather Windows: Paul Taylor, Director, Human Resources.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Committee resumed its studies of “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”.
 

Kenneth V. Georgetti and Steven Schumann made statements and, with Harold McBride, answered questions.

 
 

At 9:39 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:50 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mark Salkeld and Paul Taylor made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:38 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:41 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, once it is referred to Committee, members of the Committee submit their list of potential witnesses for the study of Bill C-44, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code and the Employment Insurance Act and to make consequential amendments to the Income Tax Act and the Income Tax Regulations, to the Clerk of the Committee no later than Thursday, October 11, 2012.

 

It was agreed, — That Committee members submit their list of potential witnesses for the study “Economic Opportunities for Young Apprentices” to the Clerk of the Committee no later than Friday, October 19, 2012.

 

At 10:44 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
