The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Matthew Kellway, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Wayne Easter for Hon. Hedy Fry.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Public Health Agency of Canada: Frank Plummer, Chief Science Officer, Scientific Director General, National Microbiology Laboratory. As individuals: Warren Chan, Professor, University of Toronto; Normand Voyer, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Université Laval. BC Cancer Agency: Marco Marra, Director, Genome Sciences Centre. University of British Columbia: David Huntsman, Professor of Pathology, Medical Director, Centre for Translational and Applied Genomics; Director, OvCaRe.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 9, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of technological innovation.
 

Frank Plummer, Warren Chan, Normand Voyer, and Marco Marra and David Huntsman by videoconference from Vancouver, British Columbia, made statements and answered questions.

 

Dany Morin gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee study how Canada must fulfill its responsibility to develop a pan-Canadian strategy for blindness prevention agreed to at the World Health Assembly in 2003 with Vision 2020: The Right to Sight (WHA 56.26). This strategy would be based on four principles: integrate vision care into existing health care systems; ensure sustainability in terms of money and other resources; provide equitable care and services to all, not just the wealthy; and maintain a high standard of care throughout.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
