The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in a televised session at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Lois Brown, Bob Dechert, Paul Dewar, Hon. Mark Eyking, Nina Grewal, Hélène Laverdière, Ève Péclet, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, Dave Van Kesteren and John Williamson.

Acting Members present: Jack Harris for Romeo Saganash, Hon. John McKay for Hon. Mark Eyking and Élaine Michaud for Romeo Saganash.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst ; James Lee, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Kerry Buck, Political Director and Assistant Deputy Minister, International Security, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean Branch; Lisa Helfand, Director, Peace Operations and Fragile State Policy Division; Patricia Malikail, Director General, Africa Bureau. Department of National Defence: MGen Jonathan Vance, Director of Staff, Strategic Joint Staff. Canadian International Development Agency: David Morrison, Senior Vice-President, Geographic Programs Branch; Leslie Norton, Director General, International Humanitarian Assistance Directorate.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the situation in Mali.

Kerry Buck, MGen Jonathan Vance and David Morrison each made a statement and, with Leslie Norton and Patricia Malikail, answered questions.

At 12:45 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:48 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed, — That the Committee hold additional hearings on the situation in Mali.

At 12:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
