The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:28 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Ben Lobb, Larry Miller, LaVar Payne, Francine Raynault, Jean Rousseau, Brian Storseth, Frank Valeriote and Bob Zimmer.

 

Acting Members present: Stephen Woodworth for Pierre Lemieux.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Steve Tierney, Assistant Deputy Minister, Market and Industry Services; Fred Gorrell, Director General, Market Access Secretariat. Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Paul Mayers, Associate Vice-President, Programs. Viterra: Richard Wansbutter, Vice President, Government and Commercial Relations. Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance: Kathleen Sullivan, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Committee resumed its study on Growing Forward 2 (Marketing and Trade).
 

Steve Tierney made a statement and, with Fred Gorrell and Paul Mayers, answered questions.

 

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Kathleen Sullivan and Richard Wansbutter made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:21 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure wich read as follows:

 

Your Subcommittee met on Thursday, February 9, 2012, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That, at the completion of the hearings on growing forward 2, the Committee commence a study of the food supply chain, which would be divided into a number of components.

2. That the Committee consider the following topics for an eventual study: food standards (food origin, food content, food safety, biosafety, etc.) and red tape reduction at the farm level.

 

It was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee commence its study of the food supply chain by inviting witnesses who can give an overview of the subject.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
