The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:05 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Jean Dorion, Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid, Mario Silva and David Sweet.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Ken Dryden.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Christine Kostiuk; Melissa Radford.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee proceed to sit in public.

 

At 1:14 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:14 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

Jean Dorion moved, — That the Subcommittee on International Human Rights denounce the decision to close three of the five regional offices of the Canadian Human Rights Commission; recommend that the government ensure that immigrant complainants will not be penalized; and report this motion to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development to be reported to the House.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Jean Dorion moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the word “denounce” with the word “deplore”.

 

By unanimous consent, after debate, the question was put on the amendment of Jean Dorion and it was agreed to.

 

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned.

 

At 2:01 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
