The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Lois Brown, Paul Calandra, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Michelle Simson and Alice Wong.

 

Acting Members present: Megan Anissa Leslie for Irene Mathyssen and Scott Simms for Hon. Anita Neville.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Sandra Gruescu, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada: Tom Dufresne, President. B.C. Human Rights Coalition: Susan O'Donnell, Executive Director. Canadian Labour Congress: Barbara Byers, Executive Vice-President. British Columbia Maritime Employers Association: Eleanor Marynuik, Vice-President, Human Resources; Greg Vurdela, Vice-President, Marketing and Information Systems.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of increasing the participation of women in non-traditional occupations.
 

Tom Dufresne, Susan O'Donnell, Greg Vurdela and Eleanor Marynuik made statements and, with Barbara Byers, answered questions.

 

At 4:59 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:01 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Nicole Demers, it was agreed, — That the Committee study maternal and child health following the government’s announcement to make maternal and child health a priority at the G8 in June that Canada will be hosting, as long as this is done before the end of May.

 

On motion of Nicole Demers, it was agreed, — That the Committee send the report entitled Women and Pension Security to the federal Minister of Finance, who is involved in Canada-wide consultations on the pension system, before the federal-provincial finance ministers’ meeting scheduled for this coming May.

 

At 5:22 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:22 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 5:36 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
