The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met by videoconference at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 214, Wellington Building, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Scott Armstrong, James Bezan, Bernard Bigras, Linda Duncan, David J. McGuinty, Christian Ouellet, Francis Scarpaleggia, Justin Trudeau, Mark Warawa and Jeff Watson.

 

Acting Members present: Mike Allen for Stephen Woodworth and Peter Braid for Blaine Calkins.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Penny Becklumb, Analyst; Tim Williams, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: TransAlta Corporation: Dawn Farrell, Chief Operating Officer. Canada West Foundation: Roger Gibbins, President and Chief Executive Officer. As individuals: David W. Schindler, Professor of Ecology, University of Alberta; Graham Thomson, Journalist.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the oil sands and Canada's water resources.
 

Roger Gibbins and Dawn Farrell, by videoconference from Calgary, Alberta, made opening statements and answered questions.

 

David W. Schindler and Graham Thomson, by videoconference from Edmonton, Alberta, made opening statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:08 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
