The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen St., the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Scott Armstrong, Patrick Brown, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Bonnie Crombie, Dean Del Mastro, Carole Lavallée, Roger Pomerleau, Pablo Rodriguez and Scott Simms.

 

Acting Members present: Mike Allen for Blake Richards and Brad Trost for Royal Galipeau.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Coalition for Cultural Diversity: Charles Vallerand, Executive Director; Daniel Drapeau, Counsel, Smart & Biggar.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, the Committee resumed its study on the Canada-European Union comprehensive economic and trade agreement, the anti-counterfeiting trade agreement, and issues regarding cultural diversity.
 

Charles Vallerand and Daniel Drapeau made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:42 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:44 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

The Committee proceeded to give drafting instructions to the analysts for the report.

 

At 4:49 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:49 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Charlie Angus moved, — That the Committee invite the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission as well as additional witnesses from broadcast and civil society to appear concerning the CRTC’s proposal to lessen broadcast standards on false and misleading news, and on the potential impacts of such a move on the Canadian journalistic landscape.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 0.

 

On motion of Carole Lavallée, it was agreed, — That the Committee extend congratulations to Denis Villeneuve and his team for their Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film for “Incendies”, based on the play by Wadji Mouawad and also to Adrien Morot from Montréal for his nomination for best make-up artist for his work on the movie “Barney’s Version”. These nominations are a source of admiration and pride, and help to show that the Quebec nation has a vibrant and open culture. The Committee wishes them the best of luck on Oscar night and, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), shall report this to the House at the earliest opportunity.

 

At 5:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
