Private Members' Business

At 11:00 a.m., pursuant to Standing Order 30(6), the House proceeded to the consideration of Private Members' Business.

Mr. Patry (Pierrefonds—Dollard), seconded by Mr. Scarpaleggia (Lac-Saint-Louis), moved, — That, in the opinion of the House, the government should act immediately to implement the measures of the Advisory Group report "National Roundtables on Corporate Social Responsibility and the Canadian Extractive Industry in Developing Countries" by creating, in an appropriate legal framework and with the funds needed, an independent ombudsman office with the power to receive and investigate complaints. (Private Members' Business M-283)

Debate arose thereon.

Motions

By unanimous consent, it was ordered, — That, notwithstanding any Standing Order or usual practice of the House, at the conclusion of today's debate on the opposition motion in the name of the Member from Westmount—Ville-Marie, all questions necessary to dispose of this motion be deemed put and a recorded division be deemed requested and deferred until Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at the expiry of the time provided for Government Orders.

Mr. Garneau (Westmount—Ville-Marie), seconded by Mr. Bagnell (Yukon), moved, — That, given this government has continually failed to improve Canada’s research funding to build Canada into a competitive, progressive knowledge-based economy, and given that science, research and innovation are the foundations of a strong economy and the creators of the jobs of tomorrow, in the opinion of this House, the government should reinvest in these areas to ensure long term, predictable and globally competitive federal funding.
