The Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities met in a televised session at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Merv C. Tweed, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dennis Bevington, Lois Brown, Sukh Dhaliwal, Roger Gaudet, Candice Hoeppner, Brian Jean, Gerard Kennedy, Mario Laframboise, Colin Mayes, Merv C. Tweed, Hon. Joseph Volpe and Jeff Watson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Analyst; Allison Padova, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. John Baird, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities.

 

Witnesses: Department of Transport: Peter Coyles, Special Advisor to the Director General of Operations, Transportation of Dangerous Goods; Marie-France Dagenais, Director General, Transportation of Dangerous Goods; Marc Grégoire, Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

That the Committee undertake a study on NAV CANADA's airport traffic services and that representatives from the organization be invited to appear before the Committee at the earliest opportunity.

That the Committee undertake the study of Bill C-9, An Act to amend the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992 once it has been refered by the House and invite Officials from the Department of Transport to appear before the Committee.

 

On motion of Joseph Volpe, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, February 13, 2009, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-9, An Act to amend the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
