The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Mark Holland, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Dave MacKenzie, Phil McColeman, Serge Ménard, Rick Norlock, Robert Oliphant and Blake Richards.

 

Acting Members present: Earl Dreeshen for Garry Breitkreuz, Irene Mathyssen for Don Davies, Bradley R. Trost for Brent Rathgeber and Robert Vincent for Maria Mourani.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Tanya Dupuis, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Ligue des droits et libertés: Dominique Peschard, President.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed a review of the Findings and Recommendations of the Internal Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin (Iacobucci Inquiry) and the report from the Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar (Arar Inquiry).
 

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 10:01 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:03 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee prepare a draft budget respecting the Committee’s proposed travel to Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan within the context of its study of Federal Corrections: mental health and addiction, for consideration by the Committee on Tuesday, May 5, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear the Correctionnal Investigator on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, in the context of its study of Federal Corrections: mental health and addiction.

 

It was agreed, — That, within the context of its study of Federal Corrections: mental health and addiction, the Committee hear the Correctional Service Canada's Commissioner and the Chair of the Correctional Service of Canada Review Panel, on Thursday, May 28, 2009.

 

At 10:39 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
