The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 12:36 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid, Mario Silva, David Sweet and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Robert Dufresne, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness: Lynda Clairmont, Assistant Deputy Minister, Emergency Management and National Security; Paul MacKinnon, Director General, National Security Policy.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, the Subcommittee resumed its study of human rights in Iran.
 

At 12:37 p.m., the sitting was suspended

The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee commence a study of the human rights policies of other nations and their human rights commissions, tribunals and systems of justice to determine best practices internationally and make recommendations for strengthening Canada’s human rights policy and practice.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hear additional witnesses on its study of human rights in Iran.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee study the situation of human rights in Vietnam and report its findings to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development in order for it to report these findings to the House, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2).

 

At 2:06 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
