The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 1:07 p.m. this day, in Room 214, Wellington Building, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid, Mario Silva, David Sweet and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Larry Bagnell for Hon. Irwin Cotler.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Robert Dufresne, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

At 1:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:09 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

At 1:13 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:13 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That further to the motion adopted on Thursday, March 5, 2009, the Subcommittee on International Human Rights begin a study on the situation of human rights in Colombia, to enable parliamentarians to make an informed choice before voting in the House on the Canada–Colombia Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act (Bill C 23), and that, if necessary, the Committee consider holding additional or extended meetings so that the issue can be given the attention it deserves despite the very short deadline.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hear witnesses on its study of human rights in Iran on April 30, May 5, 7 and 12 and proceed to instructing its analysts on the drafting of a report on this study on May 14, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hear witnesses on the review of the recommendations of the United Nations Human Rights Council on May 26 and 28, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee meet a delegation of members of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Petitions of the Parliament of the Czech Republic on June 2, 2009.

 

At 2:02 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
