The Subcommittee on the Automotive Industry in Canada of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in a televised session at 7:07 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Michael D. Chong, Mike Lake, Brian Masse, Francis Valeriote and Robert Vincent.

 

Other Members present: Colin Carrie, Mike Wallace, Jeff Watson and Terence Young.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lalita Acharya, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association: Atul Bali, Member; Gerald B. Fedchun, President. Canadian Automobile Dealers Association: Richard C. Gauthier, President and Chief Executive Officer; Michael Hatch, Chief Economist; Huw Williams, Director, Public Affairs. General Motors of Canada Ltd.: Arturo Elias, President; David Paterson, Vice-President, Corporate and Environmental Affairs; John Stapleton, Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer.

 
The Clerk of the Subcommittee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Francis Valeriote, it was agreed, — That Michael D. Chong be elected Chair of the Subcommittee.

 

The Clerk of the Subcommittee presided over the election of the Vice-Chairs.

 

On motion of Mike Lake, it was agreed, — That Francis Valeriote be elected First Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee.

 

On motion of Francis Valeriote, it was agreed, — That Robert Vincent be elected Second Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee.

 

Michael D. Chong took the Chair.

 

At 7:08 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:12 p.m., the sitting resumed televised.

 
Pursuant to the motion adopted in the Standing Committee on Industry Science and Technology on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, the Subcommittee commenced its study of the crisis faced by the automotive industry in Canada.
 

Arturo Elias made a statement and, with David Parterson and John Stapleton, answered questions.

 

At 8:37 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:43 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Richard C. Gauthier and Gerald B. Fedchun made statements and, with Atul Bali and Huw Williams, answered questions.

 

At 10:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:21 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

At 10:53 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
