The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 8:35 a.m. this day, in the Copper Room, Yellowknife Inn, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Dona Cadman, Yves Lessard, Tony Martin and Michael John Savage.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Hilary Jensen, Analyst.

Witnesses: As individuals: Jean McKendry; Shirley Tsetta. Alternatives North: Ben McDonald, Co-chair. Northwest Territories Association of Communities: Gordon Van Tighem, President and Mayor of the City of Yellowknife. NWT Council of Persons with Disabilities: Michelle Gillis, Executive Director. Yellowknife Women's Society: Arlene Hache, Executive Director, Centre for Northern Families. YWCA Yellowknife: Catherine Wilson, Director, Emergency and Transitional Housing.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada.

Ben McDonald, Gordon Van Tighem and Catherine Wilson made statements and answered questions.

At 10:06 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:32 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Michelle Gillis, Arlene Hache, Jean McKendry and Shirley Tsetta made statements and answered questions.

At 12:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
