The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:04 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Raymonde Folco, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Josée Beaudin, Dona Cadman, Raymonde Folco, Ed Komarnicki, Yves Lessard, Ben Lobb, Tony Martin, Hon. Maria Minna, Michael John Savage and Maurice Edgar Peter Vellacott.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Michael D. Chong for Dean Allison, Andrew Kania for Hon. Maria Minna and Greg Kerr for Ron Cannan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Analyst; Hilary Jensen, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canada Without Poverty: John Courtneidge, Outreach and Policy; Kelly Law, Associate Director. Make Poverty History: Dennis Howlett, Coordinator. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives: Armine Yalnizyan, Senior Economist.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Yves Lessard, —

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities examine the operation and financial support allocated by the Enabling Accessibility Fund for small or major projects submitted by organizations, and that the Committee report its observations and recommendations to the House.

 

Yves Lessard moved, — That the debate on his motion be deferred to the meeting of Thursday, April 30, 2009.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

Ed Komarnicki moved, — That the motion be amended by adding between the words “examine” and “the” the following : “at the conclusion of the poverty study and for one meeting,”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
