The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Luc Malo, Cathy McLeod, Joyce Murray, Joy Smith, Tim Uppal and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

Acting Members present: Carol Hughes for Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada: Helga Loechel, Director, Foreign Credentials Referral Office. Department of Health: Kathryn McDade, Director General, Health Care Policy, Strategic Policy Directorate; Shelagh Jane Woods, Director General, Primary Health Care and Public Health Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch. Department of Human Resources and Skills Development: Brendan Walsh, Manager, Labour Mobility and Immigration Portal; Jean-François LaRue, Director General, Labour Market Integration.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 26, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of health human resources.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee conduct a study on sodium consumption in the Canadian diet and conclude this study on Monday, November 16, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed operational budget in the amount of $14,800, for the Committee's briefing on airline policy to allow small pets in passenger cabins, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 the Committee meeting begin at 3:15 p.m. and that the orders of the day be as follows: briefing on airline policy to allow small pets on passenger cabins from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. and H1N1 briefing from 4:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

 

It was agreed, — That all H1N1 briefings be televised when possible until Wednesday, December 9, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That, on Monday, November 16, 2009, the Committee meeting be devoted to the study on sodium consumption in the Canadian diet.

 

It was agreed, — That, on every Wednesday until December 9, 2009, one hour of the Committee's meeting be devoted to the H1N1 briefing.

 

It was agreed, — That, on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Committee hear from witnesses on innovative solutions/best practices from practitioners and communities in relation to its study on health human resources.

 

It was agreed, — That on Monday, November 23, 2009, the Committee meeting be devoted to the study on health implications of the supply of radioisotopes.

 

It was agreed, — That on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Committee hear witnesses on innovative solutions/best practices in recruitment and retention in relation to its study on health human resources.

 

It was agreed, — That on Monday, November 30, 2009, the Committee meeting be devoted to a review of Chapter 4, “Electronic Health Records” of the Auditor General of Canada's Report tabled on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Committee hear from witnesses on agreement on internal trade in relation to its study on health human resources.

 

It was agreed, — That on Monday, December 7, 2009, the Committee meeting be devoted to the consideration of its draft report for its health human resources study and its study on sodium consumption in the Canadian diet.

 

It was agreed, — That on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Committee hear from witnesses on accreditation and integration of international medical doctors in relation to its study of health human resources.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee on Neurological Disease now meet on Mondays at 5:30 p.m.

 

At 5:17 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
