The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 11:14 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Scott Andrews, Raynald Blais, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Randy Kamp, Yvon Lévesque, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Peter Stoffer, Dave Van Kesteren, John Weston and Rodney Weston.

 

Acting Members present: Brian Jean for Blaine Calkins.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Claire Dansereau, Deputy Minister; Guy Beaupré, Director General, International Fisheries Directorate. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Gilles Gauthier, Director General, Multilateral Trade Policy; Loyola Sullivan, Ambassador, Office of the Ambassador for Fisheries Conservation.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of European legislative actions regarding the Canadian seal harvest.
 

Hon. Gail Shea made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:08 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:18 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of European legislative actions regarding the Canadian seal harvest. Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study on the crisis in the fishing industry.

 

At 1:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
