The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in camera at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Candice Hoeppner, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Dave Van Kesteren, Alice Wong and Lise Zarac.

 

Acting Members present: Kirsty Duncan for Hon. Anita Neville.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Jean-François Nadeau, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 3:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:35 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Dave Van Kesteren moved, — That the Committee acknowledge that commemorative ceremonies such as the Remembrance of women killed in the École Polytechnique massacre, should not be politicized and should be treated in a non-partisan manner.

 

A point of order was raised by Nicole Demers regarding the procedural admissibility of the proposed motion.

 

RULING BY THE CHAIR

The Chair ruled the proposed motion inadmissible because it goes beyond the mandate of the Committee.

 

Nicole Demers moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the following motion be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity:

That the Committee hold a commemoration ceremony on December 5 of each year, the date that Bill C-68, An Act respecting firearms and other weapons, was passed by the Senate and received Royal Assent in 1995.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and the result of the vote was announced: YEAS: Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Kirsty Duncan, Irene Mathyssen, Lise Zarac — 5; NAYS: Sylvie Boucher, Candice Hoeppner, Cathy McLeod, Dave Van Kesteren, Alice Wong — 5.

Whereupon, the Chair voted in the affirmative.

Accordingly, the motion was agreed to.

 

At 4:52 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
