The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:17 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Harold Albrecht for Larry Miller and Meili Faille for André Bellavance.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst; Frédéric Forge, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Ontario Agri-Food Technologies: Gord Surgeoner, President. Canadian Biotechnology Action Network: Devlin Kuyek, Special Advisor. National Farmers Union: Terry Boehm, President. Carleton University: Peter Andrée, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science. Canada's Outstanding Young Farmers Program: Harry Koelen; Leony Koelen; John Steele; Steven Snider; Glen Van Dijken; Derek Jansen; Richard Stamp; Eadie Steele; John Côté; Nathan Stamp; Marianne Van Burck.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, the Committee resumed its study on genetically modified organisms.
 

Gord Surgeoner, Devlin Kuyek, Terry Boehm and Peter Andrée made statements and answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted on February 3, 2009, five minutes be allocated to each questioner during the questionning of witnesses.

 

At 3:55 p.m., Brian Storseth took the Chair.

 

At 4:00 p.m., Larry Miller took the Chair.

 

At 4:21 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, the Committee commenced its study on young farmers and the future of farming.
 

At 4:25 p.m., Hon. Mark Eyking took the Chair.

 

Harry Koelen, Leony Koelen, John Steele, Steven Snider, Glen Van Dijek, Derek Janlen, Richard Stamp, Eadie Steele, John Cote, Nathan Stamp and Marianne Van Burck made statements and answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That next week's meetings be dedicated to the consideration of the draft report on the competitiveness of agriculture, and that the clerk cancel the appearances of the scheduled witnesses.

 

At 5:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
