The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Mark Eyking, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Bob Dechert for Larry Miller.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst. House of Commons: Maxime Ricard, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: University of Saskatchewan: Brian Fowler, Professor, Department of Plant Sciences. University of Lethbridge: Kurt Klein, Professor, Department of Economics. George Morris Centre: Larry Martin, Senior Fellow. Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers: David Pryce, Vice-President, Western Canada Operations.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study Bill C-29 on Thursday, May 14, 2009 from 1:00 to 2:00.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 24, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Competitiveness of Canadian Agriculture.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:50, the sitting was suspended.

At 12:53, the sitting resumed.

 

Randy Hoback moved, — That the Chair of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food write to the Interim Commissioner of the Competition Bureau (Melanie L. Aitken) to request the Bureau study the pricing and marketing practices of Canada’s fertilizer industry in reference to domestic pricing, sales and supply, and once completed, the Competition Bureau present its study findings to the Chair for distribution to members of the committee.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

 

At 12:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
