The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bruce Stanton, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Larry Bagnell, Rob Clarke, Earl Dreeshen, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, LaVar Payne, Greg Rickford, Todd Norman Russell and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Dennis Bevington for Jean Crowder and Hon. Keith Martin for Hon. Mauril Bélanger.

 

Associate Members present: Leon Benoit and Dave Van Kesteren.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst; James Gauthier, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Wade Spurrell, Assistant Commissioner, Central and Arctic Region; David Burden, Acting Regional Director General; Barry Briscoe, Regional Director, Oceans, Habitat and Species at Risk. Department of Industry: John Connell, Director General, Small Business and Tourism Branch; Shari Scott, Director, Internet Policy, Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians. Department of the Environment: Michael Wilson, Executive Director, Environmental Assessment; Virginia Poter, Director General, Canadian Wildlife Service. Parks Canada Agency: Bill Fisher, Director General, Western and Northern Canada.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Northern Territories Economic Development: Barriers and Solutions.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Marc Lemay, it was agreed, — That the Committee defray the hospitality expenses related to working meals to be held during its travel to the Northern territories from November 16 to 20, 2009, and November 23 to 25, 2009.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
