The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Bruce Stanton, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Larry Bagnell, Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Robert Clarke, Jean Crowder, Earl Dreeshen, John Duncan, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, LaVar Payne, Greg Rickford, Todd Norman Russell and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Robert Bouchard for Marc Lemay.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Christine Cram, Assistant Deputy Minister, Education and Social Development Programs and Partnerships Sector; Odette Johnston, Director, Social Programs Reform Directorate; Mary Quinn, Director General, Social Policy and Programs Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 1st, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of the Child Welfare Action Plan.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Jean Crowder moved, — That the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development meet with the Correctional Investigator, and, at a subsequent meeting, with representatives of the Elizabeth Fry Society and Correctional Services Canada, regarding the findings in the Correctional Investigator’s report regarding the incarceration of Aboriginal women.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 12:51 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
