The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymond Gravel, Luc Harvey, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Brent St. Denis.

 

Acting Members present: Thomas J. Mulcair for Yvon Godin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Statistics Canada: Jean-Pierre Corbeil, Chief Specialist, Language Statistics Section.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of the analysis of the 2006 Census.
 

A discussion concerning future business arose.

 

The Chair ruled that the Committee proceed to the order of the day, the study of the analysis of the 2006 Census.

 

Whereupon, Mauril Bélanger appealed the decision of the Chair.

The question: "Shall the decision of the Chair be sustained?" was put and the decision was overturned, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 7.

 

Pierre Lemieux moved, — That the Committee proceed to the consideration of the study of the analysis of the 2006 Census.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:YEAS: Michael D. Chong, Luc Harvey, Pierre Lemieux — 3; NAYS: Mauril Bélanger, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymond Gravel, Thomas J. Mulcair, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez, Brent St. Denis — 8.

 

Mauril Bélanger moved, — That the meeting resume in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 1.

 

At 10:30 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
