The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Steven Blaney, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Yvon Godin, Raymond Gravel, Luc Harvey, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Pierre Lemieux and Hon. Raymond Simard for Brent St. Denis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Yvon Godin moved, — That the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, the Hon. Josée Verner, be immediately called upon to appear before the Standing Committee on Official Languages as part of its study on the Action Plan for Official Languages.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 10:02 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:08 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Daniel Petit moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “as part of its study on the Action Plan for Official Languages” with the words “on the subject of the previous Action Plan for Official Languages, and only on the application of the plan in the Federal Public Service and Language Industries”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Daniel Petit and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 7.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Mauril Bélanger, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Yvon Godin, Raymond Gravel, Richard Nadeau, Pablo Rodriguez, Raymond Simard — 7; NAYS: Cheryl Gallant, Luc Harvey, Daniel Petit — 3.

 

At 10:54 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
