The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, James Rajotte, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: André Arthur, Hon. Scott Brison, Paule Brunelle, Colin Carrie, James Rajotte, Hon. Raymond Simard, Bruce Stanton, Dave Van Kesteren and Robert Vincent.

 

Acting Members present: Tina Keeper for Hon. Dan McTeague, Brian Murphy for Hon. Mark Eyking and Penny Priddy for Peggy Nash.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Eleanor Fast, Analyst; Mark Mahabir, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Association of Canadian Community Colleges: James Knight, President and Chief Executive Officer. Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Pierre Chartrand, Acting President, President's Office. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada: Nigel Lloyd, Executive Vice-President. Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada: Carmen Charette, Executive Vice-President; Chad Gaffield, President.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 7, 2008, the Committee resumed its study of Canadian Science and Technology.
 

James Knight, Pierre Chartrand, Nigel Lloyd and Chad Gaffield made statements and, with Carmen Charette, answered questions.

 

At 12:37 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:38 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motions adopted by the Committee on January 29 and February 26, 2008, the Committee resumed its study of the proposed sale of part of MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. to Alliant Techsystems.
 

Paule Brunelle moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology recommend that the Minister of Industry Canada stand by his decision, a decision made under the Investment Canada Act, not to allow the sale of the Canadian company MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA) to sell aerospace assets, including RADARSAT-2, to the U.S. company Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK), and that the adoption of this motion be reported to the House without delay.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 0.

 

At 12:46 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
