The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson, Yasmin Ratansi and Bruce Stanton.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Shahrzad Mobasher Fard, Analyst; Karine Richer, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages; Dominique Lemieux, Director General, Compliance Assurance Branch; Catherine Scott, Director General, Policy and Communications Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 21, 2007, the Committee resumed its study on Gender Budgets.
 

Graham Fraser made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Johanne Deschamps moved, — That as part of its gender analysis study, the Standing Committee on the Status of Women ask that the committee members be invited to be part of the Government of Canada’s delegation to Peru, in May 2008, to attend two major international meetings, the 13th Women Leaders Network Meeting and APEC’s Gender Focal Point Network meeting, and that the Chair take the appropriate steps to this effect.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Irene Mathyssen moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “, the Standing Committee on the Status of Women ask that the committee members be invited to be part of the Government of Canada’s delegation to Peru, in May 2008, to attend two major international meetings, the 13th Women Leaders Network Meeting and APEC’s Gender Focal Point Network meeting” with the words “and all issues that pertain to the work of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, the Standing Committee on the Status of Women wishes its members to be included in all the meetings that the Government of Canada is invited to attend,”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Irene Mathyssen and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 4.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That as part of its gender analysis study and all issues that pertain to the work of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, the Standing Committee on the Status of Women wishes its members to be included in all the meetings that the Government of Canada is invited to attend, and that the chair take the appropriate steps to this effect.

 

Glen Douglas Pearson moved, — That the Standing Committee in the Status of Women undertake a study to hear testimony from different women's group on the proposed Action Plan for Gender Equality that was put forward in Budget 2008.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 11:07 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
