The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Geoff Regan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Nathan Cullen, Hon. John Godfrey, Luc Harvey, Marcel Lussier, David J. McGuinty, Hon. Geoff Regan, Francis Scarpaleggia, Maurice Vellacott, Mark Warawa and Jeff Watson.

Acting Members present: David Tilson for Bob Mills.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sam Banks, Analyst ; Tim Williams, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of the Environment: Ian Shugart, Associate Deputy Minister; Cécile Cléroux, Assistant Deputy Minister, Environment Stewardship Branch; Basia Ruta, Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Financial Officer, Finance and Corporate Branch; John H. Carey, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Science and Technology Branch; Tony Young, A/Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy, Strategic Policy Branch. Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2008-2009: Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 under ENVIRONMENT, referred to the Committee on Thursday, February 28, 2008.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:39 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
