The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:01 a.m. this day, in the Toronto “B” Room, Delta Toronto East, Toronto, Ontario, the Chair, Norman Doyle, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Carrier, Olivia Chow, Norman Doyle, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Wajid Khan, Ed Komarnicki, Thierry St-Cyr and Hon. Andrew Telegdi.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Penny Becklumb, Analyst ; Sandra Elgersma, Analyst.

Witnesses: Assyrian Society of Canada: Paul Baba, Member. Assyrian, Chaldean, Syriac Student Union of Canada: Alda Benjamen, Educational coordinator, Member of the board. Welfare Committee for the Assyrian Community in Canada: Mirza Shmoil, Chairman and Executive Director. Mandaean Human Rights Group: Nabil Farhan, Canadian Chapter Chair. STATUS Coalition: Amy Casipullai, Policy and Public Education Coordinator, Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants; Francisco Rico-Martinez, Co-Director, Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) Refugee Centre. No One Is Illegal: Kirpa Kaur, Activist; Scott MacDonald, Certified Immigration Consultant, Carranza Barristers and Solicitors (Toronto). Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives (KAIROS): Alfredo Barahona, Program Coordinator, Refugees and Migrants. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 22, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Iraqi refugees.

Paul Baba, Alda Benjamen, Mrza Shmoil and Nabil Farhan made statements and answered questions.

At 10:06 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:11 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 22, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of undocumented and temporary foreign workers.

Amy Casipullai, Francisco Rico-Martinez, Kirpa Kaur and MacDonald Scott made statements and answered questions.

At 11:04 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:09 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Alfredo Barahona, Cosmo Mannella, Tanya Chute Molina and Mariela Salinas made statements and answered questions.

At 12:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
