The Standing Committee on International Trade met in camera at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Lee Richardson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Guy André, Hon. Navdeep Bains, Ron Cannan, Serge Cardin, Sukh Dhaliwal, Peter Julian, John Maloney, Larry Miller, Brian Pallister, Lee Richardson and Lui Temelkovski.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Holden, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear witnesses (panel of 4 witnesses per meeting) on Proposed Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement until February 13, 2008.

 

At 3:50 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 3: 51 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

 

Serge Cardin moved, — That given the seriousness of the crisis rocking the forestry and manufacturing sectors, that the Committee recommend that the government introduce as soon as possible an improved aid package for the forestry and manufacturing sectors, including trade measures to support these sectors; systematically implement the recommendations of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, especially those regarding safeguards; bring Canada’s trade laws into line with the those of the United States and the European Union with respect to anti-dumping measures; carry out open and thorough studies on the impact of all ongoing trade negotiations on the manufacturing sector, and report the adoption of this motion to the House at the earliest opportunity.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Ron Cannan moved, — That the debate be ajourned until this Committee has heard from the Finance Committee on a similar motion.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Ron Cannan and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 7.

 

Brian Pallister moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting all the words following the word “Sector” on the 4th line on the English version.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Brian Pallister and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 5.

 

Brian Pallister moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting the words “especially those regarding safeguards”.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Brian Pallister and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 8; NAYS: 4.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
