The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 4:32 this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: André Bellavance, James Bezan, Ken Boshcoff, Hon. Wayne Easter, Guy Lauzon, Larry Miller, Lloyd St. Amand, Brian Storseth and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett for Paul Steckle, Paul Dewar for Alex Atamanenko and Ed Komarnicki for Hon. Carol Skelton.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the request by four (4) members of the Committee to discuss their request to consider holding a meeting in order to review the government's funding cuts to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency
 

Wayne Easter moved, — That the Committee demands that the government provide the Committee with the plan to abandon critical food safety inspections as was reportedly approved by the Treasury Board in November 2007 and; That the Committee begin a study of the plan to abandon food safety inspections and report the results back to the House of Commons.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Brian Storseth moved, — That the debate be suspended.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:YEAS: Ed Komarnicki, Guy Lauzon, Larry Miller, Brian Storseth — 4; NAYS: André Bellavance, Carolyn Bennett, Ken Boshcoff, Paul Dewar, Wayne Easter, Lloyd St. Amand, Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac — 7.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 0.

 

Guy Lauzon moved, — That the Committee calls the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's officials as soon as possible.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Wayne Easter moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “officials” the following: “immediately and that the Profesional Institute of the Public Service of Canada be asked to appear tomorrow at 8 or 8:30 a.m.” .

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Wayne Easter and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 0.

 

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That the Committee calls the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's officials immediately and that the Profesional Institute of the Public Service of Canada be asked to appear tomorrow at 8 or 8:30 a.m..

 

The question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 0.

 

Brian Storseth moved, — That it be given 48 hours notice for the following motion: That the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food explore the differences between the Canadian Wheat Board and the Informa Economics study, investigate the real cost of the Wheat Board to western Canadian farmers.

 

At 5:37 , the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
