The Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Don H. Bell, Steven Blaney, Robert Carrier, Ed Fast, Hon. Charles Hubbard, Brian Jean, Peter Julian, Mario Laframboise, David J. McGuinty, Hon. Andy Scott, Brian Storseth and Merv Tweed.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Padova, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Agence métropolitaine de transport: Raynald Bélanger, Vice-President, Trains. West Coast Express: Doug Kelsey, President and Chief Executive Director. GO Transit: Gary McNeil, Managing Director and Chief Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, September 21, 2006, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Canada Transportation Act and the Railway Safety Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
 

Doug Kelsey made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:10 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Don H. Bell moved, — That the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities conduct and in depth inquiry into rail safety and particularly the recent CN Rail accidents in British Columbia and western Canada, including a derailment that caused an environmental catastrophe in the Cheakamus River, and a locomotive accident that resulted in the deaths of two rail workers in June 2006.

Debate arose thereon.

 

On motion of Mario Laframboise, it was agreed, — That the Committee defer consideration of the motion until the next meeting.

 

At 5:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
