The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in camera at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Guy Lauzon, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Luc Harvey, Guy Lauzon, Pierre Lemieux, Luc Malo, Richard Nadeau and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

Acting Members present: Don H. Bell for Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 
The Committee resumed its study of the draft report on the Vitality of Official Language Minority Communities.
 

At 9:30 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:40 a.m., the sitting resumed to sit in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Raymonde Folco moved, — Pursuant to the 48 hours notice adopted by the Committee May 9th, 2006, and in accordance with Standing Order 108(1), that the Standing Committee on Official Languages invite the Commissioner of Official Languages, Mr. Graham Fraser, followed at a later date, by The Honourable Josée Verner,Minister responsible for La Francophonie and Official Languages, to appear before the Standing Committee on Official Languages to discuss the 2007-2008 Estimates and Part III of the Report on Plans and Priorities.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 9:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:50 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the words “as soon as possible” be added after the words “Standing Committee on Official Languages”.

 

It was agreed, — That the words “to discuss the Main Estimates and Part III of the Report on Plans and Priorities” be replaced by the words “to discuss their results and respective priorities”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 

Luc Malo moved, — Pursuant to the 48 hours notice adopted by the Committee May 9th, 2006, that the House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages summon the representatives of Hockey Canada and Sport Canada to appear before the Committee to explain their decision to name Shane Doan captain of Team Canada at the World Championships, given that he faces serious allegations of making racist comments to French-speaking officials.

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That the phrase “their decision” be replaced by the words “the decision of Hockey Canada”.

 

It was unanimously agreed,— That the motion as amended be adopted.

 

At 10:25 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:28 a.m., the Committee resumed in camera, to study its future business.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite to appear before it, for Thursday, May 3, representatives of Hockey Canada and Sports Canada and, in the following meetings, witnesses on the subjects of court challenges, the 2010 Winter Olympics and Canada-Community Agreements.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
