The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Guy Lauzon, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Sylvie Boucher, Paule Brunelle, Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, Yvon Godin, Guy Lauzon, Pierre Lemieux and Hon. Raymond Simard.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger for Brian Murphy, Ed Fast for Luc Harvey, Anthony Rota for Pablo Rodriguez, Gary Schellenberger for Daniel Petit and David Sweet for Daniel Petit.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst; Élise Hurtubise-Loranger, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Renald Dussault, Assistant Commissioner, Compliance Assurance Branch; Gérard Finn, Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Communications Branch; Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages; Johane Tremblay, Director, Legal Affairs Branch.

 

Other Participants present: House of Commons: Samy Agha, Procedural Clerk.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the Goverment Response to the Report of the Committee on the Application of the Official Languages Act to ACE Aviation Holdings Inc. following the restructuring of Air Canada.
 

Graham Fraser made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:27 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:31 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, - That after November 24, 2006, the in-camera meeting of November 21, 2006, when Air Canada appeared, be made public.

 

It was agreed, - That the witness list for the Committee's western trip be approved.

 

It was agreed, - That the Committee send a letter to the Minister of Transport (c.c. the leaders in the House and the whips) requesting that Bill C-29, “An Act to amend the Air Canada Public Participation Act” be referred to the Official Languages Committee and,if not feasible, to a joint or a legislative Committee representing members of the Official Languages Committee and the Transport Committee.

 

At 10:55 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
