The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Patrick Brown, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Ruby Dhalla, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Gary Merasty, Michael Savage and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Vivian Barbot for France Bonsant and Olivia Chow for Tony Martin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Chantal Collin, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Human Resources and Social Development: Christian D.R. Beaulieu, Senior Counsel and Team Leader, Legal Services, Information Management and Social Programs Groups. Government of the Northwest Territories: Dan Daniels, Deputy Minister, Department of Education, Culture and Employment. City of Toronto: Janet Davis, Councillor. Government of the Northwest Territories: Hon. Charles Dent, Minister, Department of Education, Culture and Employment. Government of Prince Edward Island : Jeanette MacAulay, Deputy Minister, Department of Social Services and Seniors. Department of Human Resources and Social Development: Mark McCombs, Senior General Counsel, Legal Services. Government of Nova Scotia: Virginia O'Connell, Director, Early Childhood Development Services; Hon. Judy Streatch, Minister, Department of Community Services.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, November 22, 2006, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-303, An Act to establish criteria and conditions in respect of funding for early learning and child care programs in order to ensure the quality, accessibility, universality and accountability of those programs, and to appoint a council to advise the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development on matters relating to early learning and child care.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the amount for the 2007 Centennial Flame Research Award be set at $4500.00;

That the press release and the application form for the 2007 edition of Centennial Flame Award be published on the Committee's website and that May 29, 2007 be set as the deadline to submit applications;

That the Chair and the Clerk be authorised to take means, such as preparing an add for the Members householders, in order to give the Award some publicity;

That the report on the Centennial Flame Research Award be adopted.

 

At 10:00 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:15 a.m., the sitting resumed.
