The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in camera at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, France Bonsant, Patrick Brown, Hon. Denis Coderre, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Tony Martin, Hon. Geoff Regan, Brian Storseth and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Yvon Lévesque for France Bonsant.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

That the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and the Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec be invited to appear before the Committee prior to the end of the session to discuss the Estimates;

That the Auditor General of Canada be invited to appear before the Committee following the tabling of her Status Report on May, 16th, 2006;

That the amount for the 2006 Centennial Flame Research Award be set at $4500.00;

That the press release and the application form for the 2006 Centennial Flame Award be published to the Committee's website with a September 8, 2006 deadline for submission of applications;

That a list of possible studies suggested by Sub-Committee Members be drafted by the analysts from the Library of Parliament for the Standing Committee's consideration at its next meeting.

 

It was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

It was agreed, — That officials from the department be invited to appear before the Committee to provide an updated briefing session on the Summer Career Placement Program in light of the Report adopted and tabled in the House by the Committee in the 38th Legislature.

 

It was agreed, — That officials from the department be invited to appear before the Committee to provide an updated briefing session on the Unemployment Insurance Funds in light of the Report adopted and tabled in the House by the Committee in the 38th Legislature.

 

It was agreed, — That the Analysts from the Library of Parliament make recommendations on the Committee’s legal right to use funds from the Centennial Flame Award to raise its awareness and also provide recommendations on methods to promote the Award.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee undertake an examination of employability issues in Canada, such as workers mobility, seasonal workers, older workers, skilled worker shortages, workplace literacy and the recognition of foreign credentials .

 

At 10:15 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
