The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Anita Neville, Yasmin Ratansi, Joy Smith and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Tina Keeper for Hon. Maria Minna and Glen Douglas Pearson for Hon. Belinda Stronach.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Nathalie Pothier, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, the Committee commenced its study of Human Trafficking and the 2010 Olympics.
 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the debate on the motion last no longer than forty minutes.

 

Anita Neville moved, — Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), that the Standing Committee on the Status of Women recommends to the government that a plan be developed and implemented prior to the opening of the 2010 Olympics to curtail the trafficking of women and girls for sexual purposes during the duration of the games and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House without delay.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Joy Smith, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “government” the following: “in collaboration with provincial and municipal counterparts as well as experts from the police, international organizations and NGO`s”.

 

Nicole Demers moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting the words “during the duration of the games”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, the amendment was withdrawn.

 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Johanne Deschamps, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “games” the following: “and after” and by deleting the words “the duration of”.

 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Bruce Stanton, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “recomends” the following: “that” and by deleting the word “to”.

 

By unanimous consent, after debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Honourable Bev Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and the Status of Women to appear before the Committee in the fall.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the consideration of the draft report on the Economic Security of Women be considered at the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 5, 2007 and that the meeting on Thursday, May 31, 2007 be cancelled.

 

At 4:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:19 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of a possible breach of parliamentary privilege.

 

At 4:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
