The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Bill Casey, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Hon. Mark Eyking, Peter Goldring, Wajid Khan, Francine Lalonde, Alexa McDonough, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Lloyd St. Amand for Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Gerald Schmitz, Principal.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 10, 2006, the Committee resumed its study on Democratic Development.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 10:48 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:49 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, —That, during the joint meeting of the Standing Committee on National Defence and the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development on June 6, 2007, the ministers be each given seven minutes to make an opening statement;

that during the questioning of witnesses the time allocated to each questioner be, on the first round of questioning, ten minutes to a representative of each party in the following order: Liberal, Bloc Québécois, NDP, Conservative;

on a second round of questioning, five minutes per party beginning with the Liberal, Conservative, Bloc Québécois, Conservative, Liberal, Conservative and Liberal;

and on a third round of questioning, five minutes per party beginning with the Conservative, Liberal, Conservative, Bloc Québécois, Conservative and NDP.

 

Peter Goldring moved, — That pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, as part of their study on the situation in Afghanistan and in relation to their study on Democratic Development, travel to the country taking into account the availability of appropriate interlocutors as well as logistics and security considerations.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
