The Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics met in camera at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sukh Dhaliwal, Carole Lavallée, Pat Martin, Glen Douglas Pearson, Hon. Jim Peterson, Bruce Stanton, David Tilson, Dave Van Kesteren, Robert Vincent, Mike Wallace and Tom Wappel.

 

Acting Members present: Ed Fast for Scott Reid.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Holmes, Analyst; Kristen Douglas, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, April 25 and section 29 of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, the Committee resumed the statutory review of the Act.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed on division, — That the draft report be adopted as the Committee's Fourth Report, and that the Chair present the said report to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(1)(a), the Committee authorize the printing of any supplementary opinions as appendices to the report immediately following the signature of the Chair.

 

It was agreed, — That any supplementary opinion be limited to not more than 5 pages in Arial 12 point font.

 

It was agreed, — That any supplementary opinions be received in both official languages and in electronic format by the Clerk not later than noon, Friday, April 27, 2007.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair be authorized to make such typographical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the Report.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the report.

 

It was agreed, — That 350 copies of the report be printed in accordance with the policy established by the Board of Internal Economy in a tumble bilingual format.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Justice to appear before the summer adjournment to discuss reforms to the Access to Information Act.

 

It was agreed, — That, in light of the fact that the Department of Justice is presently in the late stages of drafting a ‘White Paper’ on the criminal justice aspects of identity theft, the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy, and Ethics undertake a study of identity theft that addresses types of and trends in identity theft, measures to increase consumer protection and that could reduce and eliminate identity theft, and measures to increase public awareness of and provide better education with respect to identity theft.

 

At 10:53 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
