The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 11:04 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Guy André, Hon. Navdeep Bains, Leon Benoit, Ron Cannan, Serge Cardin, Peter Julian, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Pierre Lemieux, John Maloney, Ted Menzies and Lui Temelkovski.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Analyst; Michael Holden, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Anthony Burger, Chief Economist, Office of the Chief Economist; William Crosbie, Director General, North America Bureau. Industry Canada: Lee Gill, Director of Industrial Research and Analysis, Policy and Sector Services Branch. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Paul Robertson, Director General, North America Trade Policy.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of Canada-U.S. Trade and Investment Issues and the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP).
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 11:45 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the Canada's Trade Policy.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report on Canada's Trade Policy.

 

At 12:14 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:16 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That dissenting opinions be appended to the report; be limited to 4 pages, single space; and be submitted to the Clerk in both official languages, 48 hours before presenting the Report to the house.

 

It was agreed on division, — That the Report, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Report be presented to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, the Clerk and the Analysts be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the Report.

 

It was agreed, — That pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the Report.

 

The Committee proceeded to consider its future business.

 

It was agreed on division, — That the Committee hold hearings on the Security and Prosperity Partnership initiative scheduled for April 26, May 1 & 3 be televised.

 

It was agreed unanimously, - That five members of the Standing Committee on International Trade and two staff travel to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Belgium the first week of June; and that five members of the Standing Committee on International Trade, accompanied by necessary staff, travel to Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore the first week of June; and that both travel activities be on the Committee's study on international trade policy

 

At 1:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
